How AI is Transforming the Gaming Industry As We Know It
By by Rashid Mansoor, CEO of MetaGravity
Gaming – a realm we’ve cherished from the pixelated paddles of Pong to the vast expanses of titles like Red Dead Redemption – has undergone significant changes across the past few decades.
The transformation has been evident in more detailed character designs, more immersive storylines and breathtaking graphics. Yet, as we stand on the cusp of another evolution – it’s the silent, intricate strings of code (aka Artificial Intelligence) that promise the most profound change.
But why is AI, which is often associated with automation and analytics, finding its foothold in gaming? Because it’s not about improving what we see, but rather how we experience it.
From Static to Dynamic Gameplay
Simply mention “AI” these days and our minds often leap to sci-fi notions of robots or the invisible algorithms that suggest our next online purchase. But for gaming, AI offers a brand new canvas to paint experiences previously thought to be impossible.
Think beyond smarter enemies or quicker in-game reactions and picture an environment that evolves, not through patches and updates, but in real-time based on your playstyle, choices and emotional reactions.
This isn’t just the next step. It’s a fundamental paradigm shift. It’s a transition from static to dynamic experiences.
Budgets Are Shifting Towards AI Research
Numbers often tell stories that words can’t. The gaming market is projected to reach $504.29 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research’s report in 2022.
More interestingly, the head of a major Japanese gaming studio recently told Bloomberg that half of his company’s game programmers and designers will be unnecessary within the next five years.
This means the giants of the industry (studios that have given us decade-defining titles) are redirecting significant parts of their budgets towards AI research and machine learning.
The overall sentiment is that the innovation currently occurring in the gaming industry (due to the impact of AI) is so rapid that the progress we’re seeing in 2023 alone is potentially more than the last 2-3 decades combined.
The companies that have been developing world-class titles for decades are struggling to keep up with the change due to their monolithic code bases. Whereas emerging startups are pushing boundaries (crafting games that rely solely on AI’s magic) and are much more nimble and able to integrate machine learning and AI tools from the get-go.
In terms of consumer appetite, it’s becoming clear that gamers seek not just static gameplay but rather a world that reacts, evolves and truly surprises – much like the one fantasised in the cult sci-fi film Ready, Player One.
Amplifying Gamer Emotion
For gamers, the medium has always been deeply personal. It’s about moments – those heartbeats where you feel victory, defeat, surprise or emotion. AI aims to amplify these moments into something innately natural and exploratory.
Remember Shadow of Mordor? Its Nemesis System (an AI marvel) made enemies evolve based on their encounters with you. That orc you defeated but didn’t kill? He remembered and he bore the scars and held the grudges. It’s a new type of reward system that incentivises player-driven storytelling.
Another example is No Man’s Sky, which offers quintillions of planets – each procedurally generated. Each player becomes a true explorer, setting foot on lands unseen by any other before. These aren’t just gameplay elements, they are emotional bridges that deeply connect players to the virtual world.
4 Key Examples of How AI is Transforming Gaming
1.Game Content Development Is Expensive 💰
Open world and massively multiplayer online (MMO) games face steep development costs, but modern generative AI can curtail these expenses by creating richer, more immersive worlds.
While procedural generation in gaming (epitomised by titles like No Man’s Sky) is an old concept, traditional methods often produce repetitive content. In contrast, generative AI promises deeper customisation, creating game worlds that connect more meaningfully with players.
2.AI Algorithms Work in Real Time ⏱️
Taking this even further, these algorithms can work in real-time and the next leap forward is where entire worlds are being generated on the fly, allowing for a level of immersion and replay-ability beyond anything we’ve seen before.
3.Large Language Models Provide a Human Interface 🫥
Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT demonstrate the potential to put a human interface on things. Open-source models such as LLaMA and Alpaca are now democratising that capability.
LLMs have the capacity to give the characters that inhabit game worlds a voice. There are already mods for old games like Skyrim and Unreal’s Matrix demo that give a glimpse of what LLMs can do to make worlds and their AI characters come alive in a way that feels convincingly lifelike.
4.AI Non-Player-Characters Give Deeper Context 🤖
The next challenge is giving these AI NPCs deeper context about the events happening to the NPC and their environment.
This deep contextual awareness will allow players to truly interact and learn about the game world in an entirely new dimension by simply speaking to its inhabitants. This adds a whole new degree of depth and meaning to gameplay.
Transformational Value
The fusion of AI into gaming isn’t a mere upgrade – it’s a fundamental transformation of value.
Firstly, narratives evolve from fixed storylines to dynamic tales – uniquely shaped by each player. Then there’s gameplay – AI ensures mechanics that mould around individual players, evolving challenges and making replayability a true exploration of the unknown.
Lastly, the worlds within these games grow organically and are not limited by a developer’s design but expanded through algorithms which promise infinite frontiers for players to explore.
A Living, Breathing World
But where does one harness this potential?
While the industry behemoths are scrambling to adapt to the technological rate of change that AI innovation is now offering, startups like MetaGravity and their MMORPG, Edge of Chaos, have a small market advantage of building games from the ground up that incorporate these transformative technologies and machine learning tools.
Recognizing the vast horizon that AI offers, we’ve ventured beyond the norm. It’s not just about smarter NPCs. It’s about breathing life into virtual realms.
NPCs with memories, landscapes that adapt to in-game events, challenges tailored to individual player capabilities and storylines that weave around choices – not just in branching dialogues but in every action taken.
For developers, we’re building a toolkit that democratises AI and allows indie creators the same capabilities as industry titans who’ve dominated the gaming market for decades.
The Next Frontier
The fusion of gaming and AI is more than just a technological trend – it’s the dawn of a renaissance in digital entertainment.
Games are transforming from products to living entities, offering experiences as unique as the individuals playing them. As creators, gamers and innovators – we’re not just witnessing this revolution, we are also its architects.
Each algorithm is fine-tuned, every AI-driven narrative explored and every challenge overcome pushes us into a future where games will not just be played, but lived.
So it’s time to embrace this future. For in the tapestry of codes and pixels, we’re weaving the dreams and realities of tomorrow.
