Another popular temperature measurement tool is the temperature probe. As it turns out, there are several factors that come into play when determining which temperature probe is the best one for your needs.
Why Temperature Probes are Superior to Thermometers
Before we get into the considerations to make, it first helps to know why probe temperature measurement tools are superior to other pieces of temperature measurement technology. While the latter works just fine in most cases, there are major differences between the two that make temperature probes a superior option.
Accuracy. Accuracy is the biggest difference between temperature probes and thermometers. They measure temperature directly, which means getting a reading that is a lot closer to precise than their competitors.
Repeatability. Temperature probes are also great at providing repeatability, which means that they provide consistent readings over time. For industries where temperature control precision is a must, temperature probes are the better option.
Durability: For the most part, temperature probes are built to hold up in extreme environments, which makes them more durable and able to hold up better than their traditional counterparts
Speed: For the most part, temperature probes provide a reading much faster than the average thermometer, which allows for real-time control and monitoring
Versatility: Temperature probes come in a wide array of types, which makes them great for measuring the temperature of gases, solids, and liquids.
Considerations to Make
With any temperature probe, there are a few considerations that should be made. Keep in mind that it depends on which kind of probe you choose (there are three main kinds). That said, here are the most important factors to consider.
Material: No matter what kind of temperature probe you choose, the material will be a key factor. Nickel, copper, platinum, and stainless steel are the most common types. Each has its benefits and downsides, so do a little research into what you need the probe for and which material would be best served for that use.
Response time: Response time can be critical depending on the application. In some settings, a near-instant response is a must. Finding a temperature probe that can deliver an immediate response can be a difference-maker.
Connector type: For things like RTD probes, the connector becomes important. Plug-in connectors, screw terminals, and others are available, each of which has its own benefits.
Accuracy: As is the case with response time, accuracy is similarly important. While a broader range may work for some applications, getting things within a single degree can be important. For that reason, you would want to check the accuracy of the probe that you choose.
Calibration is Important
The key to keeping your temperature probe working reliably and accurately is calibration. The process of calibration involves comparing readings from a probe to what is called the known standard. Adjustments can then be made to ensure that the probe provides consistent, accurate readings.
Regular calibration is important and should be done on a somewhat regular basis. This will ensure that the probe in question continues to provide consistent, accurate measurements. It all depends on what kind of specific requirements the project entails as far as how often you will need to calibrate the device. It’s better to do it fairly often just to ensure that the probe works as it was meant to regardless of pre-existing standards.
